HISTORY BITES...NOTE PAD (Seventh Edition)
This 7th edition follows quickly on the heels of the June first 6th issue – I have not suddenly become more efficient nor have I rented an office and hired staff. This introductory chapter of Retrospectives has been eight months in the making: lots of research and deep digging into a stack of old material often forgotten in other archives. I had serious help from Billy Gallagher in South Africa and Adrienne Pereria in Singapore. Adrienne is both the quarter back and wide receiver of the FHA Culinary Challenge and the biennial Battle for the Lion.
To date this archive has focused on Chefs and Teams and Competitions. I now wish to include an additional perspective in the Archive with the introduction of RETROSPECTIVES which looks at Chefs and People and Places.
Those of us who have had the opportunity to participate in major international culinary salons or events such as the WACS World Congress will have an abundance of memories that capture moments in time that are memorable. However there are also many, who have not strayed far from their home base, yet have had the opportunity to participate in, and contribute to the growth of their own associations.
RETROSPECTIVES would ask those of you who have captured on film historic moments related to Chefs and People and Places to take a moment to share those memories with us. Send me a photograph with some notes and I will draft a short story.
People often ask: “Why do you spend so many hours with this Archive?” My short answer is: ‘To each his own’. The reality is that I have never taken much satisfaction from gazing into the future in an effort to ponder multiple unknowns to a conclusion when there are still so many stories from yesteryear to be unearthed and that are, as yet, untold.
So away with time travel and moon gazing, let’s take a journey down memory lane and reacquaint ourselves with our legacy.
